FITNESS COACH FOR BABY BOOMERS

Decide how fit you want to be before hiring a fitness coach.

Any talk about fitness raises all the same negatives.

Eat less, exercise more, be mobile, move around. And my favorite, Get Up.

Many buttons on boomerpdx include the word UP as a reminder.

Up is the key motivator.

Up your interest in fitness. Up your commitment to fitness. Up your drive for better nutrition.

It all sounds the same as last time you decided to pay attention to your health, doesn’t it?

So where do you start this time?

Who were the biggest fitness figures in your life?

Jack LaLanne, Jane Fonda, Richard Simmons, all show up. You can see them in your mind’s eye.

They’ve worked for millions of people, just not you. Or not you for very long.

Why? Because they’re going the wrong direction. They’re moving from outside to inside.

You see them, do what they do, and repeat the next day. But unless you do more with them, like build your own fitness model, all they do is prop you up.

Than you fall. And you fall hard.

The weight you lost finds you. Again. The positive body image you felt disappears in the mirror you no longer look into.

You may not be depressed, but it sure feels that way. No one needs to hang an L on you since you already feel like a big old Loser.

This happens when you don’t build from the inside out.

The right fitness coach? You.

Most likely you’ve had kids, or nieces and nephews, or your friends have kids. The point here is you’ve been to some kid related events and seen their coaches.

One kid coach acts like he’s in the Super Bowl with all their intensity.

Another kid coach could care less, he’s just there because no one else stepped forward.

The right kid coach brings enthusiasm and encouragement in wins and losses. That coach knows kids will find their sport if it’s not the one in season.

Good coaching builds athletes from the inside out, the same as you working on fitness goals.

Whether a team wins or loses, they’ll still practice and get ready for the next game.

If you eat an extra slice of pizza, it doesn’t make you a failure. Save that for eating the whole pie, then you’ve got a problem.

Staying on track is the goal; getting back on track when you fall off is the reality.

Like a boozer who jumps on the wagon, you’ll need to wake up everyday with idea of saying no to only one extra helping.

That’s a win. Skip dessert, leave the last beer. That’s winning you can take to the next day.

Eventually you feel like a winner each time you make a choice on fitness and diet. Start with diet.

Power over food, in a land of fast food abundance, a land of stocked refrigerators, is real power.

That bite sized chocolate can’t be so bad since it’s so small. It’s a trick to make you eat two.

The leftovers that call you between meals? Tune it out.

No fitness coach will ride you enough to make those decisions. That’s you.

Try to focus in fitness fundamentals, not a weight goal, or clothes size like your motivation pants.

As your own fitness coach repeat these words:

“I don’t need more, I don’t need less, I just need enough.”

You won’t change in one day what’s taken a while to accumulate, but you’ll see change in some places before others.

My favorite is shoulders. Get the shoulders pumped and you see a better you. Better posture, better balance, and the rest is anxious to join in.

When is the right time to start? Raise you hand and you’ve started. Feel that shoulder.
