FAMOUS PEOPLE MAKE BAD DEALS TOO

Famous people are like unicorns around here: I’d have to make one up. Besides, I like famous people best when I know nothing about them. Call it the Elvis Effect.

HOPPER PAINTINGS: “YOU’VE BEEN HOPPERED”

Hopper paintings have turned into Bruuuce. I love both of them, but I might be done. Toooo depressing. Tooo raw. Too much of so little. To them I must bid adieu, au revoir, so long, goodbye. But first a few questions:

THUNDER ROAD ON NW LOVEJOY, PORTLAND

Thunder Road is a map of the love/hate relationship I’ve felt for Bruce Springsteen since 1975. I love that Bruuuuuce has persevered beyond all expectations. I hate the decision I made when Mary Anne in the Philadelphia clinic invited me along with her friends to see the local phenom across the river in New Jersey. […]

SHAKEY GRAVES INSIDER FUN

The last time I saw a touring musician’s guitar go wrong it was The Police and Sting broke a base string and replaced it without missing a beat in the song they played. Afterward he joked that a real band would have stopped and corrected the problem before restarting. In the history of […]

NORTH CAROLINA BATHROOM RIGHTS GONE WRONG

North Carolina Bathroom Rights #1: Don’t fall in. North Carolina gets heat for its bathroom rights law. They lose visitors like Bruce Springsteen and events like the NBA All Star Game. It’s that important to them. Big money people can skip North Carolina and take the financial hit better than us small fries. No one […]

BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN: NO NOBEL LIKE A NEW JERSEY NOBEL

Bruce Springsteen a future Nobel Laureate? If Bob Dylan wins a Nobel Prize for Literature, why wouldn’t the man once called ‘The Next Bob Dylan?’ Along with lyrics that dare challenge the scope of epic rock and rollers of the past, Gilgamesh, Homer, Virgil, Ovid, The Boss and his body of work stand […]

HOW BROKEN HEARTS STAND

Future Nobel Prize winner Bruuuuce nails broken hearts. Badlands, you gotta live it every day Let the broken hearts stand As the price you’ve gotta pay Broken hearts happen all the time. Hearts break next to you and you don’t hear a thing. Bruce Springsteen sang about broken hearts in Badlands. It fit the song, […]

BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN AND THE SACRED SIX PACK

Did Bruce Springsteen grow artistically from bad parenting? Here’s the real question: Did growing up with a dad who smoked ’em when he had ’em, and worked a six pack in the dark, make Bruce Springsteen who is today? His old man was hooked on Camels, or Marlboro’s, or Winstons,  and liked to cool them […]

MUSIC MATTERS BECAUSE

Something Happens To Our Brain When Music Matters. I just watched Bruce Springsteen onstage with Bono and U2 in New York. If feels like such a happy moment between those guys standing in middle of the greatest city in the world and singing. Isn’t that how it’s supposed to work when we hear our favorites? […]

LeBRON JAMES, THE NEW BOSS

Move It On Over Bruce. After all the noise about LeBron’s move from Cleveland to Miami with his prediction of, “Not one, not two, not three…” he learned what it takes to win one NBA title, then another. He took his talents to the Sunshine State and won fifty percent of the finals he played […]
