PHILADELPHIA TIME STANDING STILL

Philadelphia time passed by these stadiums and arenas in South Philly. It’s a shot from the Seventies with Veteran’s Stadium, JFK Stadium, with The Spectrum in between. The Phillies and Eagles played in The Vet, The 76ers in The Spectrum, with the annual Army v Navy game at JFK. Not. Any. More.

MOVING ON FROM OAKLAND CALIFORNIA

‘Moving on’ means one thing: So long suckers. But it’s different when it’s ‘your team’ that leaves town. What must Oakland California be feeling? As a sharp-eyed blogger I’d say the feeling is . . . relief. And here’s why:

VANISHING POINT: HOW TO REMEMBER PORTLAND

The vanishing point definition: The center spot on a horizon line where parallel lines in the foreground converge. Like a triangle? Maybe. Check a drawing book. The vanishing point for Portland takes another view, and it’s nothing to do with weird or keeping Portland weird. Shocking, don’t you think?

ONE PORTLAND BABY BOOMER DECADE

My Portland baby boomer decade began in 1980. It began when I stepped off the bus after a three day ride from Manhattan. (Hey, B.) For twenty-six year old me it was a life changer. By 1990 I was heading out.

SEATTLE FREEZE WARMS TACOMA

The Seattle Freeze in February isn’t about the weather. It’s not about the weather in July or August, either. If it’s not freezing weather, then what is it? Attitude, a chilly attitude.

SPECIAL BIRTHDAY? FIND SUSHI KUNI IN WEST LINN

Was the special birthday at Shushi Kuni my choice for a celebration feast? It was the inspired choice of a West Linn birthday girl who knows things, lots of things. Which includes having the inside track on sushi. Now you will, too.

REBUILDING PORTLAND A LITTLE AT A TIME

Rebuilding Portland means one thing: acknowledge what’s broken and fix it. What’s broken? The biggest thing broken is believing Portland is worth the effort. But how do you rebuild trust? You need to go out and find it.

UNDERDOG LIFER STARTS EARLY

An underdog lifer life needs to start early, otherwise it’s just following trends. But how early? Top underdogs are never the first born, the first to start new things, or the first in line. If they were first, they wouldn’t be underdogs. Start with where you were raised.

HOBBY BLOGGER EXPLAINS: WHY BOTHER WRITING?

Hobby blogger here, busy counting vanity metrics. Google analytics reports traffic from Seattle, not so much from Portland. West Coast readers show up more than any other region in the country. Call me a West Coast hobby blogger? I’ll take it, but . . .

RUGGED INDIVIDUALISM vs COMPLIANCE AND LIFE FORCE

Rugged individualism: the life force that separates quitters from finishers. Ask one of them why they do hard things and expect a question in return: “Why not?” It’s a confidence builder, and role to model. Then there’s personal compliance, which shouldn’t be a problem, but . . .
