ATOMIC BOMB EDUCATION FOR THE KIDS

ATOMIC BOMB

Atomic bomb work never ends at Los Alamos.

That’s where the legends began and this is the museum that tells the story.

The Bradbury Science Museum.

Who doesn’t like a good science museum for family fun?

David A’s fun face with Fat Man and Little Boy.

While watching a video of their work.

The First Atom Bomb, Then The Second

ATOMIC BOMB

The whole effect of standing near mock-ups of these bad boys while watching one go off is gut churning, sobering, stunning.

Then there’s the rest of the museum to take the edge off.

Kids love an arcade.

Who doesn’t love an arcade?

Adults love a good trade show. I love a good trade show, a car show, a beauty convention.

Who doesn’t love that stuff?

The museum of the atomic bomb project, and further, feels like a Marvel movie, a cartoon movie with comic book characters and dialogue bubbles.

It feels like ‘Up With Nuclear Bombs.’

Is there any work still going on with atomic bombs at Los Alamos?

Since you asked, yes.

From the Santa Fe New Mexican:

Los Alamos National Laboratory’s record $4.6 billion budget for this fiscal year will give officials an unprecedented amount of money for its nuclear weapons program, which still makes up the bulk of the lab’s spending.

“I think the writing should be on the wall that we have entered a new nuclear arms race,” wrote Geoff Wilson, director of the Center for Defense Information at the Project on Government Oversight.

“The nuclear spending floodgates have opened in the name of defending against China and a belligerent Russia, and the labs are defense contractors. This is going to be a boom season for them.”

I Talked To The Fellas About Atomic Bomb Boom Season

Me: Did that guy have to say defense contractors will have a ‘boom season?’ You wouldn’t have said it like that, Oppy? General? Come on, boom season? What is this, the Fifties?

Oppy: I’ve said all I’ll ever say.

General Groves: You’re learning. Besides, we don’t talk to bloggers.

Me: So that’s how it is? I’ve come all this way and get nothing? I thought the stonewall ended on the way up here.

Oppy: Okay, I liked the movie.

General Groves: Me too.

Me: What message do you have ‘boom times?’

Oppy and General Groves: This was popular once.

ATOMIC BOMB

Afterwards things felt a little stretched for me and the dog, like shadows on a future sidewalk.
