Writing Advice To Colin Kaepernick From Boomerpdx

Who is writing books, or more accurately, who writes books that people read? A book no one reads is like a tree falling in the forest when no one’s around.

Does it make a noise?

One thing we know for sure, Colin Kaepernick has made a noise. By not saying anything.

In a case of actions speak louder than words, he’s got a bull horn blasting from his knee.

If he was a photographer every picture he took was say at least ten thousand words.

And now he’s writing a book. With a million dollar advance from Random House?

Sports Illustrated reported it.

“Former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick has a book deal, reports ProFootballTalk.
Pro Football Talk reports the deal with Random House is worth more than $1 million, but the details on the content and specifics of the book are unclear.”

They sort of reported it. More like they reported on a report, but we get the idea.

The Los Angeles Times ‘rumored’ that he landed a million dollar book deal. That’s what responsible journalists say when they report a report.

“Colin Kaepernick, the former San Francisco 49ers quarterback who inspired a nationwide protest movement against racism, has a million-dollar book deal from Random House imprint One World, according to the New York Post’s Page Six.
Random House did not immediately respond to a request for comment from The Times.”

The link to Page Six is enough to warrant boomerpdx writing advice.

“Colin Kaepernick has inked a book deal worth just over $1 million with Random House imprint One World, Page Six has exclusively learned.
One World’s headed by book world superstar Chris Jackson, who also publishes Jay-Z and Ta-Nehisi Coates. He launched One World last year.
Ex-San Francisco 49ers quarterback Kaepernick launched the current movement of NFL players protesting during the national anthem, and he’s recently filed a controversial collusion grievance against league owners. He’s still looking for a job in the NFL after opting out of his 49ers contract earlier this year.”
The day before, the same page printed, “A source says that Kaepernick has been “taking meetings with publishers in the New York offices of WME.” He’s repped as an athlete by WME agent Carlos Fleming.
His reps didn’t get back to us.”

Before we start, you can feel good about my sports takes. All twenty eight pages of them.

And eighteen pages of writing advice. Like using complete sentences.

The intriguing part of a Kaepernick book is which way he goes with it. Will it be the knee, or the results of the knee? His life before, or life after?

Boomerpdx writing advice?

Start the day before the first knee. Build anticipation, then bring the payoff.

Who did you talk to? Where were you? What were you doing? Treat it like an investigation. Give us the means, motive, and opportunity. Give the first knee a grand entrance worthy of a Broadway show.

We’ve seen the ripple effect, watched the Texan’s owner step on his junk, the games in England. If you haven’t decided on a title?

America Stands With The Knee.

Let’s switch up and get updated on the business end of a quarterback in his prime not getting another chance to play football. We’re not talking about Tim Tebow, but where’s his book? More like where’s his books. Google Tim Tebow books. Dude is prolific.

The consensus of the NFL talent evaluators is that CK isn’t good enough to play the modern game, which he helped define.

Who else is better than him, who would get signed before him? Brett Favre? Terry Bradshaw? Troy Aikman? Tony Romo? Danny White? Roger Staubach? All rumored to be ‘taking meetings’ for the second half of the season?

But that’s another book. Stick with the knee. It says everything.

About David Gillaspie

I am a writer. This is my blog story day by day.

Comments

  1. I am very glad that piece of debris CK does not have a job. It is simply a sign of disrespect. Since he has cost the NFL 100s of millions of dollars in revenue they would be bizarre to hire him. Blacks in this country have a very high standard of living compared to the rest of the world. As do we all. Perfect? Nope. We are continuing to improve things in this country, his actions are harmful to that goal.

    • David Gillaspie says

      Hey man,

Coming from an American point of view on standard of living, it’s all about improving things like you said. The high tide lifts all boats.

Nope he doesn’t have a job and he’s standing by his convictions by kneeling. That’s the message I get. And those convictions? Police violence, inequality, and oppression need more attention. Every NFL knee you see is bent toward that.

Now he’s writing a book. Did you hit the Tebow book link? Lots of books there. Now this one. I hope it hits hard because I’m writing a book I hope hits hard, a memoir with the working title ‘Licking Cancer.’ His book will be about social awareness; mine will be about the leading edge of a forecasted ‘pandemic’ of neck cancer.

Kaepernick will write about what it feels like living on the outside of so many worlds he’d been inside as a Super Bowl quarterback; I’m 62K words into the labyrinth of cancer treatment survival from the inside and how to do it one man’s way. Mine.

He got a $1,000,000 advance. I’d call that having a pretty damn good job for his first time out. I’ll accept nothing less, myself.
