HAIR STYLE AND MORE: THE ‘HAIRAPIST’ IS IN

Hair style is a lifestyle for Debbie McRoberts.
For thirty-two years she’s been beautifying Oregon one head at a time.
And listening to all who sit in her chair. Her motto:
“What’s Said In The Chair Stays In The Chair.”

With incredible recollection, she has written a book, but not just any book.
‘What’s Said’ is part coming of age, part savvy business advice, and all heart.
From amazon.com:

Hairstylist Debbie McRoberts grew up in a town that is no longer there. Although her house and other physical landmarks are long gone, Debbie can still make the four-hour drive and reminisce.
One thing she fondly remembers is all the different haircuts she chose for herself as a teenager. Soon, Debbie wasn’t content to just style her own hair. She wanted to make it her career.

In ‘What’s Said’ we follow Debbie from Eastern Oregon to Portland, and unlike many from small towns, let alone small towns that disappeared, she stuck in the big city.
Too often life throws curve balls at small town folks moving to an urban setting.
More people, more problems, and too many choices can drive even the most well-intentioned away.
But Debbie hit the hardest pitches out of the park.
In a time when people change jobs, their hair style, and move, she has shown incredible resilience. This is a good read for people starting their careers.
In a time where people want to do their work, then forget about it, Debbie remembers.
This is a good read to learn how to stay in contact with a client base.
More than a business book, ‘What’s Said’ shows how to navigate difficult clients, how to bring them in, and how to show them out.

‘What’s Said’ Reviews

Debbie is my talented and artistic hair stylist! Her enthusiasm and insights light up each page in this wonderful book about hair and life’s journey.
Her memory for detail is perfect! She captured my story very well and my family is so excited to have me in this book.
Hair tells us about the state one’s head is in. The book, just like hair, has a life of its own.

Stylists everywhere are probably jumping up and down in agreement with Debbie’s hilarious stories of real life clients.
She has a unique talent for spotting the humor in the everyday, and putting it on the page so you feel like it just happened to you.
Everyone should be lucky enough to have a Debbie in their lives!

+ + +

A hilarious read into the lives of a hairstylist and her clients. She uses vivid imagery, and I felt as though I knew the people at the end of the story.
In many ways a hairstylist has a more personal relationship with her/his clients than their general practitioner.

What’s Said In The Chair Is More Than Hair Style

I heard about Debbie from my wife who has been a client for over two decades.
Since she works in an appearance-forward industry, Debbie has kept her on the mark.
I look forward to seeing my lovely after each appointment.
And I’ve never been disappointed. She comes back with more than a hair style
One time she returned with news of a book, Debbie’s book.

We met in person two months ago.
After a styling appointment my wife said Debbie had signed up for a class on ‘How To Tell Your Story.’
Taught by the lively Nancy McDonald at Lakewood Center For The Arts, I signed up to know more about storytelling.
On the first day we were already old friends.

Debbie: It feels like I’ve know you forever.
Nancy: David, tell us about yourself.
Me: Debbie, why don’t you tell the class about me. (Laughs all around)

I was happy to know someone who had written a book, more so when the author is determined to do more with her material.
Her dedication to her profession is matched by her drive for more: She’s working on a stand-up comedy routine.
‘What’s Said’ is a blueprint for stand-up comedy.
During a visit with a dentist chair I ask the hygienist if it was true that people tell their hairstylist everything.
She said, “My hairstylist knows more about me than my parents, my husband, or my friends.
How about you? Do you confess to the Hairapist?
Maybe you should. If you go to Debbie to unburden, you’ll also come out looking and feeling better.
Who else can you say that about?
