NOTHING FOR BABY BOOMERS TO FEAR

Just Don’t Tell The Ladies.

Remember the first time you realized women were weaker than men?

If you are a guy, did it mean you had someone you could push around after spending your life being pushed around up until then?

Or did that moment set a standard of behavior that no one would push women around in front of you, that you wouldn’t allow any bully behavior.

It’s one of the other. You choose.

While considering your choice, reflect on women’s roles in different cultures.

  • Did women design their burqa?

Did a woman say we cover our heads because “we enjoy half the light with one eye rather than prostituting our whole face,” or was it something a man named Tertullian made up?

Called The Father of Latin Christianity, Tertullian had this to say about women:

  • “You are the devil’s gateway:
  • you are the unsealer of that (forbidden) tree:
  • you are the first deserter of the divine law:
  • you are she who persuaded him (Adam) whom the devil was not valiant enough to attack.
  • You destroyed so easily God’s image, man.
  • On account of your desert-that is, death-even the Son of God had to die.”

If this was his first date conversation, no wonder he didn’t have a second.

How did that conversation go?

“We will be more attractive and desirable if we circumcise ourselves and our daughters.”

“But Mom, I don’t want my genitals mutilated.”

“There, there, honey, lets call it cutting, not mutilation. Besides, if you want a good husband, we need to cut.”

Imagine the man who sees his cut wife naked for the first time.

“Oh, yes, that’s the way, uh huh, uh huh, I like it, uh huh uh huh.”

FGC may be a cultural practice that crosses religious borders, but imagine how it would be in a burqa when it’s 120 degrees out.

From womenshealth.gov: “In most countries, FGC is performed in unclean conditions by mainly traditional practitioners who may use scissors, razor blades, or knives. In Egypt, though, up to 90 percent of FGC is performed by a health care professional. Almost every girl or woman who receives FGC experiences pain or bleeding.”

While part of the Hippocratic Oath includes “Primum non nocerum, (First do no harm)”, it’s not the worldwide standard.  Will political upheaval in the Middle East change FGC practices?

Remember FGC the next time you see an Egyptian health care professional discuss their trials and tribulations on the news.

  • Did women decide their virginity is a gift?

An older European man explained it in terms of Mary.

“You see, Mary is in our lives every day. We see our mothers and sisters as Mary. We know that virginity is the greatest gift a woman can give to their husband. If the man needs a woman he may go to the Red Light district, you understand, where prostitution is allowed and the mothers of the prostitutes are their pimps. It keeps the business simple that way.

“I myself married a virgin and my daughters were virgins before marriage. My son will be a virgin when he marries also.”

Boomerpdx Lesson: Change is slow, but boomer, listen, you don’t need a women with FGC/M. You don’t need a virgin. What you need is to become a better man, a man who encourages women to act and speak freely, to dress in comfort, and to banish the blade from their lady parts.

Better Boomer says, step up your game, it’s not asking too much.
