SCOREBOARD MATTERS IN SPORTS AND LIFE

When a game ends, any game, anywhere, scoreboard matters.
Coaching co-ed youth soccer teams meant getting trained to de-emphasize the final score.
The problem was the kids.
They kept score with each other.

The coaches kept track of how they played, their passing, their hustle, their defense.
Coaching kids early was a challenge to keep them interested in activities, not necessarily competition and score.
Success was getting the same kids into the next season in a different sport/activity.
We’d go from soccer, to basketball, to baseball or indoor soccer, to more soccer, more basketball, then football and wrestling and water polo and tennis and track and field as they got older.
If a kid latched onto any sport, then scoreboard matters.
My scoreboard.

How About Your Scoreboard

If you are old enough to understand winning and losing, then you keep score.
You may say you don’t, tell your friends you don’t, but you do.
It may not be a score that matters to anyone else but you. And that’s when things get sad.
How many years have you been a Cowboy fan with no hope for any change?
Don’t want to talk about it? I don’t blame you.
How long have you been a Portland Trail Blazer fan?
Don’t want to talk about it?
If you do, then a bragging point could be the Blazer didn’t get poured into a nice Starbucks cup and shipped to Oklahoma City like the Seattle Supersonics.
Maybe you’re a college football fan? Oregon Duck fan?
If that’s the case you are walking in high cotton.
But if you’re a Beaver Believer? It feels like the locust swarms are on the way through the transfer portal.
Michigan State has its own problems for their new ball coach.

“We cannot sustain a model that is only funded by a few individuals who deserve our appreciation for supporting SD4L for two full seasons,” the update continued. “Spartan Nation — it’s up to you!
We are calling all Spartans to step up and enroll now, as we prepare for the next chapter of supporting Spartan student-athletes… Enroll now!”

Scoreboard Matters More In Life Than Sports

Who hasn’t thought of packing up all of their crap/treasures and floating away from all of the guilt, anguish, and loose ends you’re leaving behind?
Have you given it a try? I gave it a shot.
All I got was, “Why would you move from Oregon to here? It’s supposed to work the other way around.”
So I listened to my brilliant friends in Philadelphia and New York.
One of them took their own advice and moved to Idaho. I might reach out. What do you think?
People on the move need a good reason. At least more than the weather.
Unless they’re old enough to take a shower and go into a frozen convulsion trying to warm up with a dry towel.
If that’s you, go ahead and move, but find a doctor in your new place.

Where To Go

If you leave the right way you get a party and a parade.
Leave the wrong way and it varies from a stern Fuck You.

To a helping hand on the way out.
Make the right choice for the right memory.
