FINGER POINTING HALL OF FAME

Finger pointing ought to be a sport, a professional league, since it’s so common among amateurs. It’s so popular because we all know better, or at least better than the latest opinion. There’s only one problem with starting a league, though: Everyone could do it better than anyone else. But I still want one.

TIME CRUNCH? IT’S ALWAYS CRUNCHING AND THE SHOW STILL GOES ON

Time crunch? No one’s got time for that. Oh, wait. If you’re like me, you’re either late or early getting places. Mostly late, which always brings comments like, “Have you ever heard of time management?” Yes, I have, and I’m getting better at it each time. But there’s still that problem:

WORKING HARD IS HARD WORK. WHO KNEW?

Working hard used to be a rite of passage. “Start sooner than later and enjoy the rewards longer,” was the message. So hit the grind and go until there’s nothing left to grind, like this cartoon from the New Yorker? Then what?

MAKING HISTORY? THEN MAKE GOOD HISTORY

Making history feels like something you might realize after the fact. You did something well, felt good about it, then someone says, “That’s never been done before.” Does that make what you’ve done more important? Maybe important enough to try again?

LIVE THEATER WORKS TO EXPLAIN CURRENT EVENTS

Live theater? Please. I’ve got a jacked up bill with Ziply Fiber, an AppleTV account, and the most important: Three channels of C-SPAN, the kings of slow TV, which is just my speed. Why would I leave the room with the big screen? Ever? For live theater, I leave for live theater. Don’t you?

WORLD STAGE: PLAYING MANY PARTS AT HOME

The world stage for Shakespeare was a different world than we live in today. “All the world’s a stage, and all the men and women merely players: they have their exits and their entrances; and one man in his time plays many parts. . .” Is the Shaker talking about multiple personality disorder? No, but he […]

TINY BEAUTIFUL THINGS LOVE

The best thing art offers us is revelation. Last night at Tiny Beautiful Things (TBT) was no exception. The worst thing art offers us is truth after the revelation. TBT showed I lack the same empathy gene as Cheryl Strayed. And I was shocked. I love the idea of reaching out in love, of putting […]

TINY BEAUTIFUL THINGS IN PORTLAND OREGON

Today’s the day, Tiny Beautiful Things day, at Portland Center Stage at the Armory. Truth is it could be any play and I’d still go. PCS used to be the go-to stage in Portland for my mother in law and my wife. After she shuffled off this mortal coil, I picked up the slack. Now […]

MORE PORTLAND PLEASE

In a snap shot of urban life, Portland looks best in large format. Walking the northwest streets of The Pearl a few hours before the curtain rose inside The Armory showed a city with connections between the dots, enough dots to create the web of destination we read about all over the country. […]

PORTLAND STORY THEATER TELLS THE TALE AT WILLAMETTE WRITERS

Lawrence Howard and Lynne Duddy ran the first Willamette Writers meeting of 2018. For all the wishes for a Happy New Year still echoing, their presentation confirmed the idea.   I came in right as they started and found a seat in the back, the last seat open. I start every meeting with high […]
