TIGARD PROTEST MARCH AFTER POLICE SHOOTING

Tigard protest

The Tigard protest came after a police shooting death.

Tigard Police declared a riot Thursday night after a man in mental distress died earlier in the day.

Tigard twitter caught it all:

I’m all for the protests against police. Their all dangerous thugss especially in Portland area. That being said small businesses in tigard should not be targeted, vandalism and looting here will not send the right message. Collateral damage hurts everyone.

In Tigard, i was chilling at a business here when the march started. I was unaware of this because i slept all day. I have missive stomach issues or i would be out there. I am super sad because no one ever protests out here.

Any idea who these folks are? I’m so confused about what … What

tigard cops shot and killed a man yesterday. am guessing the protest is related.

You know shit is getting crazy when there is a protest in Tigard, Oregon. I can hear it from my house.

From @tualatintimes:

Tigard police declare a riot during a Thursday night march protesting the shooting death of Jacob McDuff by police. Some protesters sprayed-painted graffiti on downtown businesses before smashing a glass door, breaking windows at the Tigard PD.

From koin. com:

Officers were called out to the Edgewood Manor Apartments near SW Hall Boulevard and SW Bonita Road early Wednesday evening. Police said they tried to arrest 26-year-old Jacob Ryan McDuff, who was in his vehicle, but he refused to be taken into custody. Officers said McDuff was armed with a knife.

Police said an officer shot and killed McDuff during the struggle to arrest him.

From twitter:

He was a man in a mental health crisis. His roommate had been calling for help for the last 5 days. The cops said they “ didn’t want to poke the bear.” He locked himself in a truck and they said they would give him some time to get out and the roommate asked to talk to him.

They said no and shot at him 10 times. The roommate feels horrible guilt that she did this. And this is exactly why cops shouldn’t be talking to people in mental health crisis. This one hits close to home

Tigard Police Protest On Shooting Close To Home

More from twitter:

When was the mast time you talked about a shooting somewhere other than Tigard? I’m sorry it hit closer to home. You aren’t alone.

One family, my family, moved to Tigard. The other choices for leaving inner-SE Portland were Gresham or Beaverton. Based on transportation, we chose I-5 over Hwy26 or I-84.

It was a family decision the went well with kids and school and sports. Moms and Dads coached youth league sports. My kid was on a soccer team coached by Lukus Glenn’s mom.

Lukus Glenn died the summer after high school graduation when his mom called Tigard Police for help with her son when he needed it.

It’s an awful memory to carry.

I had Lukus Glenn in mind when my neighborhood got police attention due to a ‘meth-friendly’ house down the street.

From hand guns to long guns, dogs, four in the morning flash-bangs, and a SWAT Team armored car at the curb, my property was a staging ground between the police presence and the house in question.

I had Lukus Glenn in mind when I was pulled over by Tigard Police and asked if I had any other weapons in the car. I had a machete on the passenger side after hacking on blackberry vines.

As a law abiding, police compliant citizen of Tigard, I follow police instructions whenever I hear them. As an Army vet I understand orders. As a private citizen with more traffic tickets than I’m proud of, I’ve been to court, lost my case every time.

And payed the fines like it was tuition

During traffic stops, don’t argue with the policeman. That’s what court time if for, to have a say, then pay. I’ve said the same thing for years. I keep saying it. The police have a job to do, just like the rest of us. They follow their training.

Eventually mental heath training, learning how to approach someone in a mental health crisis, will improve.

Tigard is in Washington County. This is from their website:

(Washington County) Sheriff Garrett has told the Glenn family that since this incident his agency has instituted many changes including mandatory crisis intervention training for all patrol deputies, initiation of a Mental Health Response Team in February, 2011, with specially trained deputies and accompanied by mental health clinicians to respond during peak hours (noon to 9 p.m.) to calls involving persons in behavioral crisis, replacement of all “beanbag” shotguns with 40mm “sponge” round weapons that have less potential for serious injury, and issue of Taser electronic control devices to all patrol deputies. Washington County Sheriff’s Office policies and training emphasize evaluation of the mental status of persons with whom deputies come into contact, and focus on de-escalation techniques before resorting to use of force where practical. Additional training has been added to further enhance de-escalation skills. Sheriff Garrett said that since January this year the Mental Health Response Team has been able to successfully de-escalate and bring about successful resolution without use of force in over 570 incidents in the county. Additional potentially violent incidents were resolved in a similar manner by other deputies.

People who have felt death close up understand the loss. It’s devastating when it’s a disease like covid when it doesn’t have to be that way, which spurs medial research for living better lives.

Would mental health training help the same way?

Lukas Glenn died in Tigard September 16, 2006.

Jacob Ryan McDuff died in Tigard January 6, 2021
