WHALE WATCHING VISION NOT SO CLEAR, BUT

WHALE WATCHING

This is the whale watching spot from the lighthouse on the east side of Kauai.

It’s the exact same spot where my party watched whales.

Momma whale jumped up. Baby whale jumped up.

Me? I jumped up, too. But too late.

Whale Watcher: I’ve come here for two weeks and haven’t seen this. I hope you know how lucky you are.

I felt lucky to see a black spot, a plume of mist. I saw enough whale to believe it was a whale.

They started jumping after I returned to the car and waited for the rest.

Everyone else left at the same time. The show was over.

I missed the whales breaching, but I saw enough. More than enough.

Earlier at Anini Beach I pulled on a pair of flippers and a snorkel mask glazed with anti-fog and swam as hard as I could out to a flag marking something.

It was out there, but not far enough to worry about.

Instead of meandering around looking for fish, I did a power swim workout breathing heavy through a snorkel.

I made the turn and headed back through the valleys between coral and rock.

I swam the crawl with my eyes looking forward, raising above water to adjust my location.

Now and then I swam into a clear space.

Halfway back I passed a sea turtle going the other direction.

I spun around and followed until it raised up for a breath. I popped out, raised my arm, then went back under.

No turtle? No problem.

I hustled back to shore, told everyone about my new best friend, and drug another swimmer out to the flag buoy.

We found the turtle taking a break on the sea floor. Same turtle?

After that ocean encounter came the whales. I felt satisfied.

Whale Watching Dinner? Sushi

WHALE WATCHING

Did we go back to the same sushi wagon we tried before?

Call it a quality control check.

WHALE WATCHING

No whales or turtles were harmed on either plate.

Good Timing Makes The Difference

From finding parking spots, to shortcuts, to sunsets, good timing happened all day long.

There’s the donut truck that cooks them on demand along with kick-ass coffee.

We heard about it from a guy in the snorkel rental store, forgot about it, then saw it from the road and stopped.

Great stop? Everyone agreed.

One surprise led to another.

The best surprise of all?

Sharing the natural beauty with loved ones as awe-struck as you, as me, as anyone who decides to find more than the ordinary.

Call it extraordinary, extra ordinary.

From turtle cruising to whale watching to feeling the moment at hand, you might want to scream for happiness, of yell for joy.

Just do it underwater in case someone thinks you might be yelling at them.
