OSU WOMEN’S BASKETBALL: TWO DOG DAYS AWAY

Whether it’s Bonneville Dam or a Beaver dam, Oregon State Women’s Basketball control their legacy. via dailyinsider.info

BoomerPDX Poll: What will be the legacy of OSU Women’s Basketball after their first Final Four?

If everything works out right the Beavers leave two dogs in the yard and bring the national championship to Corvallis.

Only teams of Huskies from Washington and Connecticut stand in their way.

Will a national title for OSU Women’s Basketball raise the profile of all sports in Oregon?

Will it raise more interest in women’s sports?

Or will a national title in women’s basketball flat line like every other sport that isn’t played in helmets and cleats?

Those are the questions asked in the BoomerPDX Poll.

Poll victims include a former women’s pro league basketball player, and a standout athlete who passed her genes to her daughters who also standout. And more.

For the sake of brevity I’ve edited answers.

Will a D1 NCAA national title for Women’s Basketball raise all sports in Oregon?

–  Give me a break. The only people who watch girl sports are parents and grandparents and a few creepy guys who coach them.

–  I wish I could tell these women to watch themselves as they move forward. Every girl basketball player wants to be you. Every players parent wants their daughter to be you.

–  Only if there’s an angle, like Oregon State playing University of Washington, that the rest of the country can tie into.

–  Maybe, if you play the Cinderella card. Can you play the Cinderella card in women’s college basketball? What card is close? It’ll take something spectacular, something bigger than the game, to leave a lasting imprint.

–  Oregon State won baseball titles and it pushed UO to bring baseball back and cut wresting. Oregon’s already got women’s basketball and they’re in the NIT Final Four, so you’ve got that.

BoomerPDX says history speaks volumes. The more titles in the archives the better.

Will a women’s basketball title raise more interest in women’s sports?

–  Active families with kids need all sorts of things to keep moving. If you have sons you can point to the women’s sports and ask, “Do you think you could do better?” If you have girls, any news about women’s sports is good news.

–  A legacy of success is easier to follow than the dark trail of failure. Win or lose, Oregon State Women’s Basketball have thrown a lot of light.

BoomerPDX says the more engaging the team, the longer the memory of achievement. If these players stand together and teach the community about the advantages of participation, no matter the sport, they will be ambassadors of health and education. Beaver Nation done proud.

Or will a national title in women’s basketball flat line like every other sport that isn’t played in helmets and cleats?

This question is tricky with CTE news for football and the one and done nature of men’s college basketball.

It takes a lot to move the needle in any sport, men’s or women’s, titles of no titles. But it happens.

We remember Jesse Owens and Muhammad Ali for their greatness and their social impact.

We remember Lance Armstrong and Marion Jones and Barry Bonds for their tainted greatness and social impact.

If the Oregon State Beavers win the NCAA women’s basketball national championship, and find a way to share it beyond their fan base, they’ll get statues on the OSU campus.

The movie Dog Day Afternoon hasn’t been remade.

If the Beavers beat the UConn Huskies, and the Washington Huskies win their Final Four game, they set the stage for Dog Day Afternoon II.

It’s time for a new basketball movie to replace Hoosiers as go-to viewing.

Now is the time.
