BROADWAY MURAL AT JEFFERSON IS FINE. HERE’S WHY:

broadway mural

The Broadway Mural is in the rearview mirror of every car heading south.

If you saw this in the rearview mirror heading south on Broadway, what would you do?

Make a right turn on Jefferson, buddy, and park the car.

If you’re an out-of-towner in Portland and cruising up Broadway on the way out, this is worth a look.

Take a walk around the block. Look, there’s the Portland Art Museum across the street.

Keep walking and look for another mural on the side of a tall building. it’s like the Broadway Mural, but more.

Do you see it yet? What’s the building to the right of the courtyard?

It’s the Oregon Historical Society. You’ve heard of it?

If not, it’s been mentioned here a few times.

It’s been a target for misguided protest. As if a museum is protest worthy. This is the museum that will tell the story of the protesters who broke into the building.

Like the protesters unhappy with a history museum, unhappy with a statue of Teddy Roosevelt, some museum patrons may be unhappy learning more about outside agitators trashing the park blocks.

Unhappiness cuts both ways.

After taking a lap around 1200 SW Park Avenue, what have you learned?

Portland skipped plowing and developing the land on the South Park Blocks.

It’s also called the Cultural District, so you’re supposed to learn something.

Step into the history museum and get started. Are you feeling it yet?

Warning: not all history is warm and fuzzy with a happy ending. Proceed with caution.
