LADY GAGA UNIVERSAL BROKEN HEART

via live nation.com

The universal Lady Gaga is the universal broken heart. She sings about emotions and seems to show the song across her face.

Barbra Streisand did/does the same thing.

Liza Minelli, too. But what makes Gaga different? I think I know.

With the right song a torch singer burns down the house. Linda Ronstadt did it all the time. “I ain’t sayin’ you’re not pretty, all I’m saying is I’m not ready.”

That’s got to hurt from all sides.

Liza in Cabaret was broken hearted for two hours.

Then Babs in The Way We Were and her own Star Is Born was a tearfest.

But none of them push the buttons like Gaga. The right buttons.

I remember her shocking stage act from different times. Looked like the second coming of Madonna but I didn’t think she had the legs for the long run.

All she did was get better and better. From Bad Romance to Tony Bennett she continued to grow artistically. How can I tell?

Metallica was doing a song with a bunch of dancers shaking it on the side. Good dancers, great dancers, had the timing and the steps and seemed keyed into the metal.

Then one of them broke out on her own. It was Gaga at the Grammys rocking like she knew it and lived it. The same Gaga jumped into the Super Bowl, did the best Carpool Karaoke.

And she keeps getting better. I think she could do copies of every lady singer song and do it better than it’s ever been done. Re-do the soundtrack to Titanic? Move it on over Celine.

What gets me about her is the blow torch voice she seems to uncork at the top of her range and still keep control. But best of all, she’s not a Mouseketeer, not someone who showed up as a kid and evolved into a star. She no Annette or Brittany.

Gaga showed up with the fire already lit, with the sort of attitude you can’t miss whether it’s on a street corner or on stage. She believes in her song more than anyone.

She makes me believe the best is yet to come. Something that rare is hard to find.

Who’s a Gaga fan? Give me a million reasons why?
